So I get an email from a friend telling me she’s been following an artist online —someone she met live at five, pre the-world-going-sideways— and that this artist was giving a free online workshop for the first time. This is a close friend who knows me very well and whose opinion I trust, so of course I go.
The workshop was three days. I attended day one and day three. It was a pleasant intro to the method, a nice break in the day, and I was happy to leave it at that. And then she offered a 90 minute discovery session. It was surprising to think she was giving away such large chunks of time, and that piqued my curiosity.
What all was she going to do? It couldn’t possibly be one long sales pitch because the friend that recommended her would know I wouldn’t be up for that. Long story short, I signed up.
To be clear, this artist has no idea I’m blogging about this. There is nothing sponsored about this post. It’s really just me sharing with you guys this incredibly cool experience.
My session started at the end of a good but very long day. We’re talking today, as in this ended less than an hour ago. I wasn’t sure what to expect or even if I had the energy for it. Well, it turned out to be a focused, insightful and even energizing experience with concrete next steps.
This last part is important because if I just wanted to make something, well I’m happy to do that on my own. I liked that there’s just enough structure to make it practical and still, she leaves a lot of room to create and redirect.
We talked; she shared the structure of the session; there was time to draw/paint and reflect; and at the end, we set a goal or two. It was a very moving experience, actually. And I’m sure it’s different for everyone because every step is based on reflection of the previous step, very personalized.
Anyway, her name is Marianne Gargour, if you want to check out her work. I found her to be very open, creative and interactive. And I’m giving her a shout out here on my blog because I’m genuinely glad I said yes to this. Absolutely worth it!
